I borrowed this from my friend Kevin Joyce, could not say it better myself: Shopping is in full swing as we prepare for Christmas this year. I'm seeing a lot of delivery trucks out on the roads, with all the online purchases from Amazon Prime. Don't get me wrong, ordering online can be really convenient for a lot of people; the working force that find it hard to get out during open hours, or someone who doesn't love the fighting the crowds or traffic to get to the stores. But for a lot of reasons, would you consider shopping local for your Christmas gifts this year?
When the economy is not looking great, and consumers have to start watching where their hard earned dollars go, it's easy to find a cheaper alternative. But these are also the times that our local businesses are relying on you to stay afloat. When deciding where to spend your money on tonight's dinner or a gift for a friend, perhaps you could consider the benefits of turning to local, independently owned businesses within our community. Benefits like watching a large percentage of that money spent locally going back into your very own community. The business owners here are your neighbours and friends. They care about the community and local non-profits and donate locally.
While you're out shopping this season, try a local restaurant's lunch menu, or purchase a Christmas present at a local gift shop. We have some of the BEST local shops. When in doubt, grab a gift card at one of your favourite local spots for your child's teacher or dayhome provider. I could start listing all my favourites here, but I want you guys to help me! Comment with an amazing local shop where you like to pick up gifts for the people in your life!
You will probably find some great products and services while helping build a strong and successful community around you.
